Advent

John 1:1-17
1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2  He was in the beginning with God.
3  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6  There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7  This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
8  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9  That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
10  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
11  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
12  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
13  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15  John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.' "
16  And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

17  For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Here the apostle John tells us that Jesus birth into this world was not HIS beginning! I do not think we will ever be able to wrap our hearts and minds around the wonder that Jesus would be willing to leave the glory of heaven and actually be born as a baby in this sin cursed earth! That is enough to ponder from now until eternity!

Advent

Today begins the season the church calls "ADVENT"
Definition: the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.
In this case the event is the BIRTH OF CHRIST.

Galatians 4:4-7
4  But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5  to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
6  And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
7  Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

The arrival of Christ the Messiah into our world was no small thing! God had been planning it for thousands of years or "from the foundation of the world" and people had been longing and looking for His arrival since the Garden of Eden! God had a plan and was not in a hurry. Year after year the plan unfolded until "in the fullness of time" God sent forth His Son." We will pause and contemplate the wonders and true meaning of the ADVENT of our Lord and Savior during this season.

Post Thanksgiving

Psalms 136:1-26
1  Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
2  Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever.
3  Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever:
4  To Him who alone does great wonders, For His mercy endures forever;
5  To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever;
6  To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, For His mercy endures forever;
7  To Him who made great lights, For His mercy endures forever—
8  The sun to rule by day, For His mercy endures forever;
9  The moon and stars to rule by night, For His mercy endures forever.
10  To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn, For His mercy endures forever;
11  And brought out Israel from among them, For His mercy endures forever;
12  With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, For His mercy endures forever;
13  To Him who divided the Red Sea in two, For His mercy endures forever;
14  And made Israel pass through the midst of it, For His mercy endures forever;
15  But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, For His mercy endures forever;
16  To Him who led His people through the wilderness, For His mercy endures forever;
17  To Him who struck down great kings, For His mercy endures forever;
18  And slew famous kings, For His mercy endures forever—
19  Sihon king of the Amorites, For His mercy endures forever;
20  And Og king of Bashan, For His mercy endures forever—
21  And gave their land as a heritage, For His mercy endures forever;
22  A heritage to Israel His servant, For His mercy endures forever.
23  Who remembered us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever;
24  And rescued us from our enemies, For His mercy endures forever;
25  Who gives food to all flesh, For His mercy endures forever.

26  Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.

Did you ever write your own Psalm of Thanksgiving? Psalm 136 provides us a good template for doing just that. Write your own story and plug it into the Psalm above! For His mercy endures forever!

Black Friday

Matthew 27:45  Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.

Now that was a BLACK FRIDAY! Isn't it ironic that THANKSGIVING DAY is followed by a day of GREEDY SHOPPING! Everyone starts making their WISH LIST of what they want for the next Holiday! I totally enjoy Christmas in so many ways but what we know as "BLACK FRIDAY" pales into insignificance when we think of the verse above!

John 3:16 tells us:
For God so loved the world, that he GAVE His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life!

I hope you get some good deals if you go shopping today - but the BEST deal of all was already purchased for us at Calvary's cross!

Thanks be to God for HIS unspeakable GIFT!

PS - I do know it's about business staying "in the black" ;-)

November 26, 2015

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes that is actually my Thanksgiving "Tom" Turkey! :-) I do love to celebrate and this is a little tradition passed down to me by my Dad's Mom, Anna Kalis. We never sat down to Thanksgiving dinner without the bird being "dressed" with buttons down his chest (cranberries on toothpicks) and wax paper booties on his feet, parsley all around. I have no idea where she got the idea from but as you can see it has stuck with ME! While most people laugh pretty hard at this tradition, it does make a rather pretty picture, don't ya think? :-)

Any one who knows me a bit knows how much I love to celebrate anything and everything, but especially the holidays! On Thanksgiving, my hubby and I used to don some type of "pilgrim" attire to remember our founding fathers the pilgrims who thanked the Lord with a feast after losing many loved ones on the voyage here aboard the Mayflower and then throughout the hard cold winter. In spite of their grief and hardships they celebrated.
There's a little saying, "If you'll think, you'll thank." Stop and think of happy memories you share with your siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, grand parents, etc. No one else loves us, knows us, gets us, and yes maybe annoys us, like our own family! Joy is a choice and its up to us to choose it. We can choose to go on as "poor me victims", "blame mongers", "woe is me", absent ourselves, or we can choose to focus on the blessings. I'm not suggesting we deny our pain but rather that we face it. Face it, embrace it, release it. You will enjoy your family and they will enjoy you. If you knew it was the last time you'd ever be able to celebrate together, your words would be tender and gentle, you'd listen carefully and intently to one another, you'd laugh heartily at family humor and you'd come away comforted rather than depressed and oppressed.

I pray that no matter what is going on in your heart and life, you will celebrate a Joy filled Thanksgiving. I know the pain of celebrating after brokenness and loss of loved ones. I've allowed Jesus to heal my wounds and I've chosen JOY. You can too.
When I was a girl Thanksgiving looked like this:
Mom got up early put the turkey in the oven
We all got up and dressed for church
Thanksgiving Service was a big deal - well attended - anyone who came was permitted to share whatever they were thankful for (we had to participate too) - no preaching - special music.
Then home for a feast with relatives and friends and oh joy it was not a Sunday so we could go out to play and when we were older even watch some TV!
Grand mom Kalis dressed the turkey before we sat down to eat it. :-)
At the table we had place cards with our names on them and Bible verses my Mom had written out by hand that had the word Thanksgiving or thanks in it, which we all had to read aloud and then say what we were most thankful for. Someone prayed a long prayer before we ate.
Unfortunately it was all ruined by the heaps of dishes to wash up and put away!
Today Thanksgiving looks like this:
I get up and put the turkey in the oven
We watch the Macy's Day Parade, of course!
Then I cook a lot more food than we can eat
There are a lot less relatives to cook for - many are already in heaven.
We still take a turn and thank the Lord for our many blessings.
We sit and talk a lot longer than when we were kids.
We all help clean up.
Hubby watches football.
I like to end the day by watching "Miracle on 34th Street"

Psalms 89:15: "Blessed are the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance." Whatever or however you do it, CHOOSE JOY and have a truly Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Ever wonder what God's will is for you? Here it is! In everything GIVE THANKS! Not FOR everything - some things happen to us and in the world around us that are absolutely evil and demonic we do not give thanks for evil but rather we give thanks for our salvation and that He has said that He will never leave us nor forsake us! Keep thanking!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalms 107:32-43
32  Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people, And praise Him in the company of the elders.
33  He turns rivers into a wilderness, And the watersprings into dry ground;
34  A fruitful land into barrenness, For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35  He turns a wilderness into pools of water, And dry land into watersprings.
36  There He makes the hungry dwell, That they may establish a city for a dwelling place,
37  And sow fields and plant vineyards, That they may yield a fruitful harvest.
38  He also blesses them, and they multiply greatly; And He does not let their cattle decrease.
39  When they are diminished and brought low Through oppression, affliction and sorrow,
40  He pours contempt on princes, And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way;
41  Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction, And makes their families like a flock.
42  The righteous see it and rejoice, And all iniquity stops its mouth.
43  Whoever is wise will observe these things, And they will understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

Oh that men would give thanks to the LORD, for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

This Psalm gives lots of scenarios of difficulties and and stressful circumstances but always ends with encouraging us to give thanks! Notice that we are not promised that we will have no distress or difficulties, yet we are to keep on thanking!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalms 107:22-31
22  Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with rejoicing.
23  Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters,
24  They see the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep.
25  For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea.
26  They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble.
27  They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits' end.
28  Then they cry out to the LORD in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses.
29  He calms the storm, So that its waves are still.
30  Then they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven.
31  Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

Human nature tends to wait until times of distress to call on the Lord. This Psalm tells us over and over that we should give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and not just wait until we are in distress. Thankfully, the Lord is gracious and merciful with us and answers us no matter what! This week share some answer to prayer you've received in your lifetime with your family or friends! Keep thanking!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalms 107:16-21
16  For He has broken the gates of bronze, And cut the bars of iron in two.
17  Fools, because of their transgression, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18  Their soul abhorred all manner of food, And they drew near to the gates of death.
19  Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses.
20  He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
21  Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

We used to sing a chorus that said:
Lord I thank you, thank you, thank you,
Lord I thank you, thank you, thank you,
Lord I thank you all the days of my life.....

When I was sick Lord you healed me,
When I was sick Lord you healed me
When I was sick Lord you healed me
So I thank you all the days of my life... etc.

Using a journal to record your prayers and then the Lord's answers is a good way to help us remember the many  "wonderful works" to us His children! Take some time this week to remember some of your own personal answers from heaven! You will be blessed!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalms 107:9-15
9  For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness.
10  Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, Bound in affliction and irons—
11  Because they rebelled against the words of God, And despised the counsel of the Most High,
12  Therefore He brought down their heart with labor; They fell down, and there was none to help.
13  Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses.
14  He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their chains in pieces.
15  Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

We are reminded in these verses to cry out to the Lord when we are in distress! We have a resource! When he answers and delivers you from your distress don't forget to GIVE THANKS for His goodness and His wonderful works! Keep thanking!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalms 107:1-8
1  Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
2  Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
3  And gathered out of the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south.
4  They wandered in the wilderness in a desolate way; They found no city to dwell in.
5  Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them.
6  Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He delivered them out of their distresses.
7  And He led them forth by the right way, That they might go to a city for a dwelling place.
8  Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

When you study it out the Lord was always looking for the children of Israel to remember to praise and thank Him for how He had delivered them out of Egypt. However, the journey through the wilderness was difficult and they soon forgot his miracles and failed to give Him the honor and thanks. It tells us in Hebrews that we should take warning from their failure and not be the same way! Let's decide today to be among those who remember to THANK and praise all the time! Since we cannot do that on our own the good news is if we ask, He will help to remind us as well!

Thanksgiving

Revelation 7:12
Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.

Here we get a glimpse into the worship of heaven and find "thanksgiving" included! Do you ever ponder what thanksgiving might look like in Heaven? Or maybe what thanksgiving might sound like in heaven? One day we will join the heavenly throng and add our thanksgiving to the thunderous chorus! Meanwhile keep on offering Him thanksgiving here and now!

Thanksgiving

Colossians 4:2
Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.

NLT version:
Col 4:2  Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.
The Message Bible
Col 4:2  Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude.

Whatever the version we are to pray with thanksgiving! I've noticed that when I start praying with thanksgiving sometimes I forget all about the all the petitions I have and that thanksgiving TAKES OVER! :-) Not that we should NOT bring our requests to God because we are told that we SHOULD!
Sometimes we hear prayer presented as an inconvenient obligation or duty and made to feel guilty that we do not pray more! It changes everything when we realize that prayer is not some mandatory obligation but rather an amazing privilege! WE GET TO PRAY! We are allowed access to the throne room of heaven! We get to converse with The One Person in the universe who is able to move on our behalf like no one else can or will! That should put a spring in our step and make us walk with our head held high!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Colossians 2:6&7
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,  rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Here is another injunction to ABOUND in thanksgiving because we are redeemed ones! Sometimes we get used to the truth that we have been REDEEMED and forget to be THANKFUL that our Heavenly Father loved us enough to allow His precious only begotten beloved son to DIE IN OUR PLACE! Meditating on this truth will certainly cause us to ABOUND with thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

This verse commands us to lose our worry and present our requests to God WITH THANKSGIVING! We know we are told not to worry but doing it is not so easy! Maybe the antidote to worry is to start giving thanks! Ever listen to your own prayers? Do they start with thanksgiving? I've heard prayers that sound more like a "God to do list" and please hurry up! Let's keep giving thanks and see what happens!

Thanksgiving

Isaiah 51:3  For the LORD will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, And her desert like the garden of the LORD; Joy and gladness will be found in it, Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

This was spoken about Israel. What can be found where we live? Is it "joy and gladness, ... thanksgiving and the voice of melody"? If we really understood how important our words actually are - that they really create our tomorrow we would thank and praise more! Keep on praising and thanking HIM today!

Thanksgiving

Psalm 147:7
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; Sing praises on the harp to our God.

All of the verses I chose for this November devotional have the word "thanksgiving in them". There are lots of other verses that also talk about giving thanks! Here again we have that command to SING to the Lord with THANKSGIVING! We get hung up about how well we sing or don't sing - but notice it does not say to sing only if you have a melodious voice! You might not have a harp but don't let that stop you from singing your thanks to the most High God!

Thanksgiving

Psalm 116:17
I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.

We think of giving an "offering" as money in the offering plate on Sunday morning but the Bible tells us that our THANKSGIVING is an offering and God likes it! That is an offering we can participate in every day of the week!

Psalm 107:22
Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing.

Declare His works with rejoicing! When we are really excited about something we find ways to share our excitement with others. When is the last time we were so excited over the work of God within our lives that we could not keep from sharing it with those around us? Stop - think - remember something HE has done today and SPREAD THE WORD!

Psalm 100 - A Psalm of Thanksgiving
Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

One more thought before we move on - "And His truth endures to all generations" - This is good news! Nothing in our existence remains or endures! But HIS truth ENDURES! When we allow His truth to envelop us and our limited understanding rather than trying to take our understanding and try to figure HIM out somehow HIS TRUTH seeps into us and our existence and it works! Valid reason to overflow with joyful shouts of THANKSGIVING!

The end of this Thanksgiving Psalm gives us more reason to be THANK FULL! "For the Lord is GOOD; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations!"

He is GOOD! Sometimes our circumstances make us question that! It's ok to have those questions, yet ultimately we will find out that indeed HE IS GOOD!
His mercy is E V E R L A S T I N G! Whew! We can conjure up some mercy for a little while but forever? ? ? This is certainly cause for THANKSGIVING! "His mercies are new every morning"

Here again it mentions to come before His presence with singing! I don't think the Psalmist means we should wait until we get to church sing either! Sing your way through the day! There is something about singing that lifts your spirits and lightens your heart. I have a co-worker that often sings as she goes about her work. It is a blessing!
The Psalmist goes on to tell us why we have something to sing about! Our Creator has owned and cares for us as a shepherd does his sheep! Mind boggling for sure - and certainly great cause for jubilant singing!

Psalm 100 - A Psalm of Thanksgiving
Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

Here we find a whole little Psalm of Thanksgiving! I commented on the "joyful shout" yesterday so let's start with the next phrase "Serve the Lord with gladness" Seems like it might be unnecessary to be told to serve the Lord with gladness, but truth be told, sometimes we do NOT do it! We get weary in well-doing - we wonder if anyone ever notices - we wonder why no one else does what we are doing and on and on - and this is just what life is all about - are we willing to serve the Lord with gladness? Period! If we are complaining then who are we really serving? Just a good way to check up on ourselves! Let's make whatever adjustments we need to and really serve HIM with gladness! HE KNOWS and HE cares! Not even a cup of cold water given in His name, escapes His watchful eye!

Psalm 95:2
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

Same verse as I posted yesterday, but now I want to ask you when is the last time you "shouted joyfully to Him with Psalms"? When we feel jubilant over some sports teams accomplishment that meets with our approval we can become pretty VOCAL! ;-) How about a joyful shout of thanks to HIM who has Redeemed our souls from destruction and given to us life everlasting!! May be a worth a few joyful shouts with psalms of thanksgiving - and there are many to choose from (or write your own)

Thanksgiving

Psalm 95:2
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

What do our prayers sound like? A long to do list? Notice it says to come before His presence with THANKSGIVING, not a long list of what God is to do and please do it all right now! Ever notice how people who spend time giving thanks continually always have more to be THANKFUL for?

Think about it: when you give a gift to someone and they display genuine delight and thankfulness for what you have given, how does that make you respond? Normally we want to give to that person again and again because they seem so grateful! The reverse it also true: give a gift to someone and never hear back a word of thanks - what do you think - ? "That's it I'm not giving them anything ever again!" :-) TRY IT! Start coming to HIM with genuine THANKSGIVING! If you THINK you'll THANK!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalm 69:30
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

SING! Singing is a wonderful way to help us give thanks to God! MAGNIFY HIM! Ah herein lies an eternal truth! What do we magnify? Do we magnify our complaints? Do we magnify our aches and pains? Do we magnify our accomplishments? Do we magnify the work of our enemy and evil? When we spend time MAGNIFYING HIM first of all, it delights HIS heart. Second it blesses our own souls. Thirdly, it absolutely transforms the atmosphere around us and creates a whole new reality if we let it! Try it! Let's stop magnifying ourselves and our woes and start magnifying the LORD OF GLORY!

Psalm 50:14
Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.

How often we petition God and promise if you will answer this prayer for me I'll be thankful or I'll _________fill in the blank! In the New Testament we have the story of 10 lepers who came to Jesus and he healed them. He told them to go and show themselves to the priest and as they went they were healed. You would think that they would have turned around and came back singing and dancing and shouting their thanks but ONLY ONE returned to offer thanks! Jesus wondered where the other 9 were and why they didn't come back too. Maybe we have some catching up to do - some thanking for answers we have forgotten or taken for granted. Now is a good time to start recalling those blessing and start giving THANKS!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Psalm 26:7
That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all Your wondrous works.

I love the words "voice of thanksgiving" it sounds like something I would like to listen to! :-) Makes me wonder if I sound like a "voice of thanksgiving" or an old grump! Sometimes we don't even realize that we are grumping and complaining about just almost everything! Let's start listening to our own voice and see what we sound like!

Happy Thanksgiving!
